ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Motorists who have been frustrated with periodic surface repairs on the Poplar Street Bridge won’t see that same nightmare with the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge.

Project Director Randy Hitt says the new bridge’s deck is concrete with steel reinforcement whereas the PSB has a steel underdeck, making it more prone to expansion and contraction.

The new bridge will also have a two-inch overlay of concrete mixed with latex, more flexable and resistant to salt and brine. Hitt says the overlay is designed to last 20 years before it is simply milled off and replaced.

Another matter, snow removal, should also be easier. Hitt says snow can be pushed over to a ten-foot section on the outside part of the deck and onto a six-foot section on the inside.

“We’ve actually had Missouri and IDOT with their trucks out there to do dry runs just to kind of get a feel for what the new routes are going to be,” he explained.
