St. Clair County Board Seeks Sales Tax for Jail Renovation

Quarter cent sales tax will be on March ballot

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) – The St. Clair County Board passed a referendum Monday night to put a 25 cent sales tax hike on the March ballot to renovate the county jail.

Board Chair Mark Kern says the sales tax would fund a $37 million expansion of the 43-year-old jail and bring it into compliance with federal law.

The jail is overcrowded and failure to add on could mean a court order forcing St. Clair County to build a costlier jail.

The proposed sales tax hike will need a simple majority for passage.
