SIUC Mourns Loss of Barry Hinson’s Son-In-Law

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KMOX)- A holiday that normally brings the highest of highs for many people turned into the lowest of lows for Southern Illinois University men’s basketball coach Barry Hinson.

Hinson’s son-in-law, Niles Thomason, died suddenly on Christmas morning.

“Words cannot express the grief and sadness we are feeling upon hearing the news of Coach Hinson’s loss of a family member,” said SIUC Athletic Director Mario Moccia. “As a University, we stand by Barry’s and Angie’s side to offer them our heartfelt support. We ask Saluki Nation to keep the Hinsons in their thoughts and prayers.”

Thomason and Tiffany Hinson married in 2004. Mrs. Thomason and a young son reside in Colorado.

Coach Hinson will take a leave of absence, the university announced Friday. Associate head coach Tom Hankins will guide the Salukis on Sunday at Miami University.

Hinson expects to resume coaching duties, early next week, as SIUC prepares to host Wichita State on Thursday in the Missouri Valley Conference opener.
