Man Shot in Florida Movie Theater Had Ties to St. Louis Area
MOUNT STERLING, Ill. (KMOX) – The man who was shot and killed in a Tampa, Florida movie theater Monday had early ties to a community just north of St. Louis.
43-year-old Chad Oulson grew up near Mount Sterling, Illinois and went to Brown County High School. People in Florida who knew Oulson said he had no anger issues and dearly loved his wife and daughter.
Authorities say Oulson was shot by Curtis Reeves, a retired Tampa police officer. The 71-year-old allegedly shot and killed Oulson because he was texting and later threw a bag of popcorn at Reeves.
During Reeves’ first court appearance Tuesday, his attorney, Richard Escobar, argued that Florida’s “stand your ground” law should apply to this situation because Reeves felt he was being attacked.
“The alleged victim attacked him,” Escobar said, adding that Oulson threw something, possibly popcorn, at Reeves. “At that point in time he has every right to defend himself.”
Judge Lynn Tepper said that throwing “an unknown object does not equal taking out a gun” and shooting someone.
Reeves is held without bond on a second degree murder charge and faces life in prison. A bond hearing will be scheduled in the coming days.
Mount Sterling, Illinois is about 80 miles north of St. Louis.
