Metro-East Teen Charged In String Of Vehicle, Home Break-Ins

CASEYVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) – An 18-year-old Caseyville man has been arrested and charged with breaking in to 21 vehicles and three homes.

Columbia Police Chief Joseph Edwards says Tyler Ashcraft began his crime spree by breaking into cars the day after Christmas and then moved to breaking into homes.

A juvenile from Collinsville is believed to have taken part in the crimes as well. That individual is not in custody yet but Edwards says they know who he is and are looking for him.

Ashcraft is charged with 21 counts of burglary of a motor vehicle and three counts of residential burglary. He’s being held on $50,000 bond.

Edwards says the department put a priority on solving the case because the crimes progressed from car breaks to home burglaries.

“Breaking into a home in the early morning hours means someone is home. And the possibility of violence occurring increases when the home is occupied.”

Edwards said many of the cars were unlocked and had valuable items in them when they were broken into.

“We remind residents that while our community is relatively safe, they still need to lock their vehicles.”
