Child Abuse: Breaking the Cycle

by Debbie Monterrey dcmonterrey@cbs.com

The story of 23-month of Jabria Phillips being beaten to death by her stepfather for “stealing” a piece of cake is heartbreaking. News that she had numerous previously broken ribs and other injuries adds to the heartbreak.

Pam Moussette of the Family Resource Center says typically, parents who beat their children have grown up that way. They, too, were abused and they don’t know another way.

Did you know . . .

• 1 in 4 children endure some form of physical or sexual abuse

• St. Louis had more than 14,000 reported cases on child abuse in 2012

• Family Resource Center provides safety and healing to over 7,000 children and family members each year

There is help available. Both for the child (to remove them from a dangerous situation) and for the parent (to learn how to discipline without violence, how to control that temper).

Family Resource Center is celebrating 40 years of helping children and families in our community. I’m proud to be part of the committee for “From Darkness to Light: 40th Anniversary Gala.” We’d love to see you there on February 22nd at the St. Louis Science Center!

Silence is a friend of child abuse. If you suspect or see abuse, report it.
