JENNINGS, Mo. (KMOX) – A drug suspect is in critical condition this morning, after being shot by police in Jennings last night.

At about 9:45 p.m., St. Louis County criminal investigations detectives working a drug case, knocked on the door of a home in the 9200 block of Hathaway, just north of the Halls Ferry circle.

They say that when he answered, the suspect displayed a handgun so fearing for their lives, the detectives opened fire.

Several shots were fired. It’s not known if the suspect fired back. He was hit at least once.

No officers were injured.

The suspect’s name has not been released yet.

Earlier on Wednesday, an armed suspect was shot and killed by St. Louis Police officers in the 5300 block of Union.

Two officers assigned to the Special Operations Division were monitoring a vehicle wanted in a felony fleeing case in St. Louis County. They laid down spike strips which stopped the vehicle but the suspect fled down an alley. Police say the officers saw the man carrying a gun so when he turned a corner and ran out of sight they drew their police weapons. When they turned the corner they spotted the man pointing a gun at them. They fired a number of shots.

The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Stephon Averyhart, was pronounced dead at a hospital. Police say they recovered the firearm and narcotics.

Under department policy, the two officers have been placed on administrative leave.
