I-55 Reopens After Fatal Accident

An accident in Bloomsdale has I-55 shutdown.

BLOOMSDALE, Mo. (KMOX) – I-55 is reopening in Ste. Genevieve County after a fiery overnight tanker-truck accident that claimed the life of an Illinois trucker.

Highway Patrol Trooper Juston Wheetley tells KMOX the truck was passing a southbound car when it drifted off the left side of the highway and hit the end of a guardrail.

“It caused the tractor trailer to begin to overturn. As it overturned, the trailer separated from the tractor and landed in a creek bottom where it caught fire. The tractor overturned onto the roadway of southbound 55 and it also caught fire,” says Wheetley.

The driver’s identity has not been confirmed. It’s also not known what the tanker was carrying. MoDOT had to examine the bridge to make sure it was not damaged in the accident.
