ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Some of the Blues brought back medals from the Olympics. The Canadians won the gold. The Swedes, the silver. Blues captain David Backes brought back dogs.

“That was quite a mission. There were a lot of no answers to questions when we were trying to get them out,” says Backes. “It’s a global issue with strays and mistreating them.”

Two of the thousands of strays in Sochi are now under the care of Five Acres in St. Charles, the animal shelter that’s worked closely with David and his wife, Kelly, and their foundation, Athletes for Animals.

These rescues were two of the toughest they’ve encountered. Backes says it sets an example and is great for the cause. You can learn more about Backes’ foundation at athletesforanimals.org.
