ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – One man is dead and a police officer is shot in the chest after a fiery crash overnight.
It happened at 2:30 AM near Woodson and Natural Bridge.
A St. John police officer saw a speeding car and pulled out to follow it when it crashed into the guard railing and caught fire. The officer tried to rescue three people – 1 man, 2 women – inside, but when he approached the car someone opened fire, shooting the officer in the chest. He had a bullet proof vest on and suffered what’s being called ‘non-life threatening injuries’.
The officer returned fire.
The man was killed but authorities are unsure if his death was due to the accident or if he was shot by the officer. The two women were rescued from the car. One woman was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The officer, a 10-year force veteran, has been released from the hospital.
Police don’t know why the vehicle was speeding up Woodson before it crashed, or why they were shot at.
