ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Thousands of area residents are considered to be “unbanked”.

Nearly 10 percent of those living in St. Louis — more than 100,000 homes — have no interaction  with banks and are needlessly spending money each year on “fringe” financial services.

Robin Boyce with the Comptroller’s Office is a member of the St. Louis Regional Unbanked Task Force (STRUT).

“The FDIC came out with a study that said that St. Louis is number one in the most unbanked people in the country,” she said.

STRUT is hoping to connect 20,000 households over the next two years.
