ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The United States Navy could be looking to buy some more St. Louis-made fighter jets keeping the production line here operating beyond 2016.

Reuters is quoting several sources as saying the Navy plans to add Boeing’s 22 EA-18G Growlers to a list of “unfunded” priorities requested by congress.

The Navy did not seek funding for Growlers, or Boeing’s Super Hornets, in its budget and a Navy spokesman says the service is still finalizing its unfunded priorities list. However, Reuters says four sources are confirming the service will add the Growlers.

One possible catch: the unfunded priorities list has to go through senior Pentagon officials who have said they’re committed to Lockheed Martin’s troubled F-35 fighter jet.

Currently the Growler and Super Hornet lines are scheduled to shut down in two years.
