ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – High winds played havoc with power lines in Missouri and Illinois overnight, plunging several thousand people into total darkness.

While a majority of those outages have already been restored, Brian Bretsch with Ameren Illinois says there are still some homes and businesses around East Alton that are without power.

That’s after heavy winds knocked out power to more than 12,000 Ameren Illinois customers, including a large chunk in St. Clair County.

“In the case of Cahokia, high winds caused a cross arm to snap off. As we do in all situations, we go out and assess the situation as quickly as we can,” says Bretsch.

And those repairs have now been made and power restored in Cahokia.

On the Missouri side patches in O’Fallon, Kirkwood and University City are still without power.
