TROY, Mo. (KMOX) – There’s relief in Troy, Mo. this afternoon, as the alleged attempted abduction of a little girl there turns out to be a misunderstanding.

Police detective Tony Stewart tells KMOX that a couple called police after seeing a Facebook posting on the incident, and told them that they were probably the people they were looking for.

Stewart says it was their 11-year-old son who prompted the report.

“The juvenile who was in the backseat for whatever reason thought it would be funny to open the back door and ask the girl standing in the yard if she wanted some candy,” Stewart says.

Stewart says the boy thought it was just a joke. The parents disciplined the boy at the time, but he will be “formally counseled” this afternoon.

“He was reprimanded by his mother at the time, but at that time they didn’t realize how serious of a situation it was,” he says.
