CLAYTON, Mo. (KMOX) – A longtime member of the St. Louis County Council has died.
County Executive Charlie Dooley’s office says Kathleen Kelly Burkett passed away, Saturday, after battling cancer.
Dooley says Burkett was a no-nonsense person who said what she meant and meant what she said, and she loved representing the people of the second district.
The Democrat was elected to the council in 2002 and re-elected twice.
In addition to becoming the chair of the council’s committee of the whole, Burkett also headed-up the revenue and personnel committee.
Here’s the full statement from County Executive Charlie Dooley:
“Kathy Burkett was a dear friend; she was family. We met at the 1988 Democratic National Convention after she spilled coffee all over me. We laughed about it and we we’ve been close from that day.
Kathy was a no-nonsense person who said what she meant and meant what she said. She was the consummate politician but she didn’t have any tolerance for petty politics or posturing. She never hesitated to let you know what she was thinking and when she gave you her word on something you could take it to the bank.
Kathy adored her family and friends and she took care of her constituents like they were her own family. She loved representing the people of the 2nd Council District.
My heart is heavy right now but Kathy died the way she lived—on her own terms. My prayers are with her family and I know she’s resting in peace.”
