ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have recalled left-handed pitcher Tyler Lyons from Memphis (AAA) and that right-handed reliever Jorge Rondon has been optioned to the triple-A club. Lyons will start tonight’s series opener against the Mets at New York’s Citi Field.
Lyons, 26, has made three starts at Memphis this season, going 2-0 with a 3.32 ERA. He fanned 18 batters in his 19.0 innings pitched and allowed just one home run while working six or more innings in each of his three starts. His most recent outing came last Wednesday (April 16) when he held Nashville to just one run over his season-high 7.0 innings pitched, as the Redbirds beat the Sounds, 7-1.
Lyons went 2-4 with a 4.75 ERA in 12 games, eight starts, for the Cardinals in 2013. He made his Major League debut on May 22, 2013 at San Diego and went 7.0 innings with just one run allowed. The former 9th round draft selection (2010) out of Oklahoma State University followed up his debut with another stellar performance on May 28, limiting the Kansas City Royals to one run on just two hits in 7.0 innings.
Rondon, who was recalled from Memphis last Thursday (April 17), had no appearances with the Cardinals during their weekend series against the Nationals.
Lyons will wear uniform #70.
