ST. LOUIS–Organizers of a fundraising effort to renovate the Gateway Arch grounds and the surrounding area say they’ve hauled in $178 million of the $250 million goal,  mostly through corporate donations.

During a ceremony at Ball Park Village, it was announced the Taylor Family of Enterprise Holdings has raised and matched monies totaling $73 million for the project.

Emerson Charitable Trust and Monsanto have also made gifts of $10 million.  Other lead donors include the McDonnell family, the Boeing company, Edward Jones, Express Scripts, the William T. Kemper foundation and Pinnacle Entertainment, Inc.

Former Anheuser-Busch president David Peacock issued a challenge for ordinary families to make donations to help bring in the remaining $72 million.

Master of Ceremonies Joe Buck called out to a man wearing a Black Hawks jersey, asking him to make a $20 donation.  The man walked through the crowd, stopped at the stage and handed Buck a hundred dollar bill.

Buck gave the cash to Peacock.
