ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - When you think of a barbershop quartet you might imagine the scene in The Music Manolder men with straw hats and loud jackets.

Well, the hats and jackets are still around, but quartets sound very different now.

Todd Johnson is with the Ambassadors of Harmony.

They are the 2004, 2009, 2012 International Barbershop Harmony ChorusChampions, and they’re seeing a lot more young people join.

The Ambassadors of Harmony’s youngest member is 10, and the oldest member is 82.

So, why are barbershop quartets becoming more popular with youth?

“I think with the recent popularity of a capella music in general, and then with all the various skits and quartets like Jimmy Fallon, who has a running skit he does on his show,” Johnson said.

Just this week, Fallon made headlines for a lip sync battle on his show with actress Emma Stone.
