It begins officially over Memorial Day weekend and ends over Labor Day, but Hollywood always gets a jump on the summer movie season a few weeks earlier. Hence the release of the re-envisioned “Godzilla” on May 16.
Last weekend at the box office, Seth Rogen’s new comedy “Neighbors” showed signs that summer 2014 might be a very good time for motion pictures by landing in the top box office spot with a very healthy opening gross of $51.1 million.
In second place last weekend was “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” with $37.2 million, which gives it $147.9 million for two weeks in release. Rounding out the top five box office films from last weekend were “The Other Woman,” “Heaven Is for Real” and “Captain America: The Winter Solider.” “Captain America” has sold $245 million in tickets during six weeks in release.
