#Throwback Thursday: The First Dierbergs
(KMOX) – The year is 1854—before the Titanic sank, before Kansas was a state.
The Daily Missouri Republican ran an ad for St. Louis University, where room and board was about $150, and if you stayed the holiday, too, you had to pay an extra $20.
It was also the year that Dierbergs took root when a general merchant exchange opened on Olive Street Rd., just east of where Highway 270 crosses Olive today.
Boots, kerosene, and staples like flour and sugar were sold. William Dierberg bought the store in 1914, turning it over to his two sons in 1929.
Now, the fourth generation is running the show. Greg Dierberg is president of Dierbergs markets. He says his parents never pushed them to be a part of of the business, but he saw their passion and pride.
His earliest memories?
“I remember my family would take all of the kids out in the back of the station wagon and look for new store sites,” he says. “They’d tempt us with ice cream to get us to drive all around town looking for spots.”
He began working in the store’s produce department when he was 12.
“As you grew up, you’d peel back more layers of the onion and you’d get more of a flavor of what it was about,” he says.
Dierberg says he’s glad he was able to learn from his grandmother who passed away five months ago, at the age of 107.
Dierbergs now has 25 store locations and more than 4,000 associates.
