ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – A five-week long undercover operation on prostitutes and sex acts in south St. Louis has netted 29 arrests.
Police Captain Dan Howard says many of the arrests took place in Sister Marie Charles Park, a riverfront park off South Broadway.
“When we send our undercovers down the walkway of the park, there’s some shrubbery and some grasses and so forth, and you’ll see some subjects inside there,” he says. “A lot of times that’s where the lewd contact is.”
He says he’ll see several male subjects just sitting in their car in the parking lot designated for the park.
“I am going to promise dramatic improvement in Sister Marie Charles Park because I think it’s disgusting that somebody can’t bring their kid down to the park for the purpose of the park,” Howard says.
Of the 29 arrests, 18 are men accused of soliciting a prostitute, six are known prostitutes, and five are men accused of lewd acts in the park with other men.
Howard says the male customers are from St. Louis City and County, as well as Illinois.
The ongoing crackdown will concentrate on the Carondolet neighborhood and the Dutchtown neighborhood along Grand Avenue and along Bates Avenue between Broadway and Grand Avenue.
Those arrested are getting their pictures and names released to the media in the hopes that shame will act as a deterrent.
