ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Local leaders of the Jewish, Islamic, and Catholic faiths issued a joint statement on Saturday:

“Shalom, Salaam, Pax,

We wish to state our solidarity with Pope Francis, President Shimon Peres and President Mahmoud Abbas as they gather in the Vatican on June 8 to pray to God for the gift of peace in the Middle East.

We all want peace. As Pope Francis observed: “Many people build it day by day through small gestures and acts; many of them are suffering, yet patiently persevere in their efforts to be peacemakers. All of us – especially those placed at the service of their respective peoples – have the duty to become instruments and artisans of peace, especially by our prayers.”

We ask that the members of our religious communities pray for peace on June 8.

May the prayer meeting for peace in the Vatican be a blessing for the cause of peace in the Middle East.”

- Rabbi James Goodman, President, St. Louis Rabbinical Association Batya Abramson-Goldstein, Executive Director, Jewish Community Relations Council

- Muhamed Hasic Imam, Islamic Community Center

- Robert J. Carlson, Archbishop of St. Louis
