COAL VALLEY, Ill. (CBS St. Louis) – A little girl got kicked by a pony when she tried to pet it after finishing her ride.
WQAD-TV reported that the family is not happy with how the zoo attendants handled the incident.
Patty Ramirez was at the Niabi Zoo on Saturday with Sadie, her three-year-old granddaughter. Ramirez recorded her granddaughter’s ride on her cell phone, including when Sadie was kicked by the pony.
“You don’t see a two-and a three-year-old down and just walk away when there’s a big animal standing next to them,” Ramirez told WQAD. “They have to have more responsibility; they have to have better training.”
Mark Heinzman, Niabi Zoo Director, regrets that the incident happened but wants to inform zoo-goers that animals can be unpredictable.
“As with any animal, there’s some inherent risk you have to pay attention to, just because they are animals,” he told WQAD.
Heinzman also pointed out that there is a sign posted outside the pony rides that reminds families they are responsible for their children’s safety.
Ramirez just wants the zoo to better train their pony handlers and attendants.
