FERGUSON, M0. (KMOX) – Police said they fired smoke and tear gas canisters into a crowd of defiant protesters who gathered in Ferguson after a midnight curfew went into effect.

St. Louis Alderman Antonio French tweeted that those who remained in the streets after midnight had guns and wanted to hurt police officers.

Missouri Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson told reporters at 2:30 a.m. news conference that seven protesters were arrested and charged with failure to disperse. Johnson also reported that one protester had been shot, and was taken to a hospital in critical condition. There were no details given about the shooting, or the victim.

As of 3:00 a.m. most of the protesters had left the area.

Johnson did not say during the news conference whether or not the curfew would be in effect Sunday night.
