ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The Gateway Arch is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2015.
The keystone piece was hoisted into place 630 feet above the St. Louis riverfront on October 28, 1965.
To commemorate the historic occasion KMOX News has produced a 3-part series entitled “The Gateway Arch-Spanning 50 Years”, in which we spoke with Arch historians, relatives of Arch designer Eero Saarinen, and those who actually worked on the monument throughout icy winters and boiling summers.
It relates the story of the Arch’s history from an idea in the mind of Luther Ely Smith, to today’s efforts to make the Arch grounds more accessible to the public, and a more integral part of the downtown experience.
