Lawmaker: Make Pro Sports Owners Who Skip Town Pay

JEFFERSON CITY (KMOX) — A state lawmaker, still sore over the Rams’ departure, has introduced a measure to punish sports owners who do that in the future.

State Rep. Anne Zerr (R-St. Charles) says the area is stuck with $10 million to $12 million dollars in bond payments a year on the Edward Jones Dome through 2021 — that wouldn’t be the case going forward. Owners would be responsible for making sure publicly funded stadiums are paid off before they’re free to leave.

“That would have to be satisfied if a franchise owner would leave, before it’s wrapped up, they’ve got to be liable for it,” Zerr told KMOX’s Mark Reardon.

Zerr says she doesn’t want to eliminate tax incentives entirely.
