MARYVILLE, Ill. (KMOX)(UPDATED 3:50 p.m.) The Maryville Police Department has confirmed that a gas main explosion has shut down Highway 162 at Highway 159 and Highway 157 to all traffic.

A male victim suffered severe burns and has been hospitalized, according to Maryville Police Chief Robert Carpenter.

The explosion occurred about 1:30 p.m. at Highway 162 near Nottingham Estates in Glen Carbon, at a construction site for new subdivision called Villas on Nottingham.

A nearby subdivision was evacuated as a safety precaution.

Several vehicles believed to belong to construction workers caught fire and also exploded, spewing flames and smoke about 100 feet into the air, witnesses say.

Highway 162 remains closed between 159 and 157 until further notice.
