GODFREY, Ill. (KMOX) – Volunteer firefighters are needed in Godfrey.
The Godfrey Fire Department is looking for volunteers to assist with short-staffing and an increase in emergency calls.
Fire Chief Erik Kambarian says both paid and volunteer staffing within the department has declined over the past few years. He says “An indirect effect of the economic downturn is that more and more able-bodied people are working second and even third jobs to make ends meet instead of taking that free time they used to have to volunteer.”
The number of paid firefighters in the department have decreased dramatically in recent years. Kambarian says “We had 40 firefighters in 2011 and today, even though we run 300 to 400 more calls a year, we have 10 less firefighters – we have 30.”
Kambarian says he would also like to see his volunteer staff to increase to 20 members. Right now, there are about 12.
Those interested in joining the department are asked to attend a recruitment event on Thursday from 9:30 A.M. until 3 P.M. at the Godfrey Village Hall.
