Women With Dense Breasts Should Be Screened Annually, Study Says

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – How often should a woman get a mammogram? A new study says it all depends on her medical history and breast density.

A study found in the Annals of Internal Medicine concludes that a woman’s breast density should influence the frequency with which she is screened for breast cancer.

Current recommendations suggest women between 50- and 74-years-old be screened every other year, but SLU Care breast radiologist and director of breast imaging for SSM Health Dr. Debbie Bennett says “There is a smaller population of women who have dense breasts and who are increased risk for breast cancer.”

Women with denser breasts are encouraged to be screened annually.
