ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo will assume the role of captain for the St. Louis Blues in the 2016-17 season. The team announced the designation Thursday, with a month remaining until preseason games begin.
The 26-year-old was selected fourth overall in the 2008 draft by St. Louis, and made his first NHL appearance as a teenager that year. He is the 21st captain in Blues franchise history, taking over for David Backes who was signed by the Boston Bruins this offseason.
Pietrangelo led the Blues in average ice time and had the team’s third-best plus-minus rating last season. In eight NHL seasons he has complied 225 points in 459 careers games.
He is signed with St. Louis through the 2019-2020 season with an average annual salary of $6.5 million.
The Blues first preseason game is at home on Sunday, September 25, against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
