The Cardinals lost a lead late at home to the Athletics and fall 3-2 in rookie Alex Reyes’ first ever Major League start. The Cards top prospect pitches four-and-two-thirds innings, giving up just one run on two hits.
But the 21-year old walks four batters and ends up coming out of the game in the fifth.
Matt Bowman surrenders two runs in an inning and a third for his fifth loss on the season.
Offensively, the Cardinals hit a home run in their 16th straight game when Randal Grichuk goes deep in the second inning off Oakland righty Zach Neal. That’s Grichuk’s 18th home run on the season.
The Cardinals have alternated wins and losses for the last week and see their record drop to 68-60. They are 14 games behind the Chicago Cubs for first place in the National League Central division.
