Traffic is back to normal on I-44 near St. James after a lengthy shutdown on Saturday. The highway was closed for seven hours after an SUV crashed into the base of an Ameren-Missouri transmission tower. A leg of the transmission tower was damaged. Crews made repairs and the highway was reopened shortly after seven, Saturday night.
our earlier story:
ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Interstate 44 was closed in both directions, Saturday afternoon, between Rolla and St. James, Missouri due to a crash that toppled power lines.
The Missouri Department of Transportation said the blockage began at 12:45 pm and was expected to last until 6 to 8 pm, possibly later.
Outer roads were also closed along the interstate.
MoDOT suggested using a westbound detour of Route 68 north to Route P west, then south on Route 63 to Rolla and back onto westbound I-44.
The eastbound detour is north on Route 63 to east on Route P, then south on Route 68 to St. James and back onto eastbound I-44.
As of 3 pm Saturday, there was a ten-mile backup in each direction approaching the interstate closure points.
