Harry Hamm: ‘Follies’ and The Rep at 50

“Follies” is arguably a perfect choice as the first show of The Repertory Theater’s 50th anniversary season. It is also their most splashy, most expensive and most challenging start to a new season in years.

“It’s about theater and all things theatrical,” says The Rep’s Artistic Director, Steve Woolf, about their production of ‘Follies.’ “It was way ahead of its time when it opened in 1971. It’s a huge, complicated show with 28 cast members. It has a very wide story span between the 1920s and the 1970s. I saw the original three times at the Winter Garden Theater. I was just a student. Seeing it in rehearsal now I am more amazed than ever. I wanted to open this season big, and ‘Follies’ is just the ticket.”

The Rep’s new production of “Follies” is directed by Rob Ruggiero.

Ruggiero is one of the busiest and most sought-after directors in the business. He has extensive credits on Broadway, off-Broadway, on national tours and regionally. He has worked regularly before at both The Rep and The Muny.

“Acting and performing is really a rough life,” Woolf said. “Our audiences like the fact that our shows can connect with them so well in their own lives and struggles. With many people our productions are very personal. Our audiences also like surprises. ‘Follies” is going to give them all that and more.”

My first review of “Follies” at The Rep will air “live” at 7:45 Saturday morning on KMOX.
