Remakes don’t always measure up to originals at the box office, but the new “The Magnificent 7” opened respectably  with rave comments from post-viewing audiences and better than average reviews.

With Denzel Washington heading the cast, “The Magnificent 7” was number one at the box office with an even $35 million for its opening weekend, which was about $10,000 less than what was projected. The movie looks headed for about $125 million over its initial run in North America.

The new animated film about where babies come from, “Storks,” delivered $21.8 million to put it in second place. In third place was “Sully” at $13.8 million, giving it a grand total of $92.4 million for three weeks. In fourth spot was “Bridget Jones’s Baby” with a feeble opening number of $4.5 million followed by “Snowden” in fifth place with $4.1 million. Opening next weekend are the comedy about bank robbery called “Masterminds” and “Deepwater Horizon.”
