Former Officer on Trial in Alleged Assault Case

Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) – A former police officer is on trial for allegedly punching a man in the face outside a downtown St. Louis bar.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 36-year-old Steven Blakeney of St. Louis County is charged with misdemeanor assault. Prosecutors say Blakeney, who was off-duty, beckoned three women to his unmarked police car around 2:40 a.m. Sept. 4, 2014, saying they were too drunk to drive.

A friend of the women, Billy Baker, told jurors Tuesday that he confronted Blakeney and was punched in the mouth.

Blakeney has since been fired as a Pine Lawn officer. He faces federal prison time in an unrelated conspiracy case, and allegations that he drugged and abducted two women in an unrelated federal civil lawsuit.

Blakeney has denied hitting Baker.
