It’s a true story. Most people know about it. A tremendous natural disaster that caused 11 fatalities and billions of dollars in damage because of the resultant oil spill of over 4 million barrels in the Gulf of Mexico. The new film that chronicles the events from 2000 gives it a fresh and very human retelling that is not quite a positive public relations piece for British Petroleum, who owned and operator the off-shore drilling rig called the Deepwater Horizon.

The first-rate cast is lead by Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russell.

The pride of Christopher, Illinois, John Malkovich, portrays a BP executive who pushed the crew of the platform to proceed with their work without completing necessary safety tests on the platform’s operational mechanisms. The film clearly blames blind profit motive as the primary reason for the disaster.

There seems to be disagreement among some of the characters portrayed in the motion picture about the honesty of how they were shown and their true roles in the events. That noted, the essence of what happened is correctly and forcefully shown. I saw the movie in an IMAX format and the scenes of the explosions and fires were absolutely frightening.

At the end of the movie, stay as the credit roles. You will meet some of the “real” people that were on the ill-fated platform. And you won’t soon forget them.
