ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – This time last year, IKEA in Midtown opened to much fanfare. But has the store lived up to its promise?

Alderman Joe Roddy, whose ward includes IKEA, says the answer is a definite “yes.”

In addition to the 40 percent increase in sales tax revenue in that zip code, IKEA helps spur the continued growth of the Cortex district.

“[IKEA] really turned the spotlight on this part of town, and has created an opportunity to do some development across the street” at the City Foundry site.

Then there’s the new hotel, apartments, parking garage and office building planned for within a couple of blocks of IKEA.

“There’s going to be nothing like it in the St. Louis region in five years,” Roddy says.

Today’s birthday celebration will include $500 dollar gift cards, $1 desserts and other surprises for customers.
