East STL Man Sentenced for Shooting at State Trooper

EAST ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – An East St. Louis man is sentenced to 50 years in prison for firing a gun at an Illinois State Trooper.

The trooper stopped 52-year-old Gregory Nelson on the northbound entrance ramp to Interstate 255 from State Street in June 2015 after he suspected Nelson was intoxicated. Nelson fired the weapon while outside the vehicle, the trooper returned fire. Neither were injured.

Nelson will have to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence on attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm charges.
