GRANITE CITY, Il. (KMOX) – Madison County public schools are taking part in a nationwide rally to support improving public education.
The rally, #ReclaimOurSchools, is part of an effort put on by the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools, an organization made up of parents, teachers and community leaders.
Joe Carrington, president of the Madison School district’s teachers union says educators need to look at how children experience every aspect of their school day and evaluate the district and themselves.
“We’re in a process of looking at everything from how we greet the kids in the morning to how feed them to how they’re assessed in their classes,” Carrington says.
He notes the rally is meant to remind the community of the effort needed to educate the whole child.
“It takes a village to raise a child and no piece of that puzzle should be left untendered. You should look at every aspect of what we’re giving the child and make sure they’re getting every piece of the puzzle,” Carrington says.
Other districts participating include Belleville, Granite City, Peoria, and Champaign.
