The film version of “The Girl on the Train” is based on Paula Hawkins very popular novel of the same title, although the book was set in England and the movie is set in New York City and some trendy suburbs.

Emily Blunt leads a fine cast consisting of Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux, Edgar Ramirez, Lisa Kudrow, Allison Janney and others. When we first meet Blunt’s character, Rachel, she is an alcoholic with a busted marriage and lots of regrets. She rides the commuter train daily, although it seems she hasn’t worked in over a year so her destination is really just looking at the backyard of her old home where her ex-husband and his new wife and baby seem to be residing happily every after.

Rachel has also become engrossed with another home where an attractive woman and her husband live, and where Rachel believes she sees the woman cheating on her husband. Then the attractive woman ends up murdered. Rachel become fixated on it all and is even considered a suspect herself by the police because he addled brain can’t really sort out the things she needs to know to unravel the mystery.

Confused? You might be if you haven’t read the book. The film has an effective, sinister tone to it although it’s a bit muddled in the middle. The last 20 minutes are the most enjoyable as the real killer and their motive is revealed.

I kept wondering how Alfred Hitchcock would have handled all this.
