SULLIVAN COUNTY, Mo. (KMOX) – The Humane Society of Missouri has rescued five emaciated horses and two mules from Sullivan County.

They are now en route to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Franklin County.

Carmen Skelly tells KMOX that since June, the Humane Society has had a pending case against the owner of the animals.

Skelly says, “the sheriff’s office has been watching these animals, as well as receiving several complaints. They continued to deteriorate, becoming very thin and not being ready for winter.”

The animals will now go through extensive care, treatment and rehabilitation at Longmeadow.

A court hearing to determine who receives custody of the animals will be on Monday.
