Cancer Fundraiser For Affton Man Scammed Out of $8,000

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – A charity that raised $8,000 for an Affton man with cancer is under investigation, after the patient never saw the money.

Organizer Melissa Carlton says police are investigating after a bookkeeper she hired to handle the money, never turned it over to the cancer patient. She says the fundraiser was completed in September, and for the next 30 days, exchanged text messages with the woman she hired asking, ‘What was going on with the money?’

Carlton gave copies of those conversations to police, but she says at this point, the money is probably already spent.

“(The patient) never asked for the help,” Carlton says. “This was us just trying to do something good. He never asked us to do anything. And I think that’s the part that kinda hurts you the most, is when he couldn’t be a more deserving person of this money.”

The September 25th event in Affton featured a raffle and 5K run. Donors gave anywhere from $35 to $1,000 each to help the man. The Better Business Bureau is also raising concerns about the charity, Serving Others Successfully.
