900 Without Power Downtown After Underground Fire

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – An underground fire in an Ameren Missouri manhole cuts power for about 900 customers scattered throughout a 20-square-block area in downtown St. Louis.

It happened around 11:20 a.m. below the sidewalk at Locust and Broadway, thick smoke smelling of burned rubber filled the intersection.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Ameren says most of the customers should have power back on by midnight tonight.
