Cancer Faker Goes to Prison

TROY, Ill. (KMOX) – A Metro East woman who accepted hundreds of dollars in donations after falsely claiming to have cancer is going to prison.

28-year-old Melissa D. Barton of Troy, Illinois was indicted two years ago in connection with a scheme in which she made fraudulent cancer claims and solicited funds from numerous donors.

She pled guilty to two counts of Theft by Deception over $500 and was sentenced to 18 months behind bars.

Barton will also have to pay nearly $1300 in restitution.
