HAZELWOOD, Mo. (KMOX) — An attempted carjacking on the parking lot of Hazelwood Southeast Middle School this morning put the school on lockdown.

St. Louis County Police Sgt. Shawn McGuire says the location is “definitely concerning and it’s definitely unusual.”

McGuire says the victim was on the parking lot when a man approached her with a gun and demanded her car keys. She gave up her keys, but McGuire says the suspect then for some reason got spooked and ran away in the eastbound direction.

“Officers are actually still on the scene and still in the area trying to find this suspect,” he told KMOX just before noon.

The suspect is described as an African-American man wearing gray sweatpants and a black hat.

There were no injuries in the encounter.
