Blessings in a Backpack
CBS Radio St. Louis is proud to be a part of Blessings in a Backpack. Together with our partners Bunge North America, Burns & McDonnell, Plaza Motors, JP Morgan, Logos School and COCA we have raised over $12,000 to help feed 50 school children on the weekends during the school year for three consecutive years.
Blessings in a Backpack works to ensure impoverished elementary school children are fed on the weekends throughout the school year. There are 20+ million children in this country who are at risk of hunger.
The consequences of hunger are much more than a growling stomach– Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, increased hospitalization, lower IQ, shorter attention spans, and lower academic achievement. Children are fed during the school week by federal government programs, but this program makes sure they’re getting nutritional meals over the weekend, too.
Over 60,000 children in 544 schools and in 42 states are currently being fed by Blessings in a Backpack. Just $80 feeds a child on the weekends for a 38 week school year. Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance are the desired outcomes of this program.
