Charles Osgood

Charles Osgood, host of The Osgood File, is heard four times each weekday morning drive time on radio stations nationwide. Each three minute Osgood File focuses on a single story ranging from a breaking development of national importance to a whimsical human-interest vignette. Some of these he does in rhyme, which is why he is known as CBS’s Poet in Residence.

Osgood’s thought provoking broadcasts attract one of the largest audiences of any network radio feature and have won him numerous awards over the last 25 years, among them two George Foster Peabody Awards from the University of Georgia, the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA), a Marconi Award and a Radio-Mercury Award. The Washington Journalism Review named him Best Radio Reporter in its annual Best In The Business issue five years in a row.

As anchor of the CBS News television broadcast “Sunday Morning,” Osgood has won another Peabody and three EMMY Awards. His predecessor on “Sunday Morning,” the late Charles Kuralt called Osgood “One of the last great broadcast writers.”

Osgood has been inducted into three industry Halls of Fame: The National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, the Radio Hall of Fame at the Radio Museum in Chicago, and the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame.

Osgood has written five books including “Nothing Could be Finer Than a Crisis That is Minor in the Morning” (1979), “There’s Nothing That I Wouldn’t Do if You Would Be My POSSLQ”(1981), “Osgood on Speaking: How to Think on your Feet Without Falling On Your Face” (1988), “The Osgood File” (1991) and “See You On The Radio” (1999). He also edited a book of World War Two humor entitled “Kilroy Was Here” (2001).

A graduate of Fordham University, Osgood holds honorary degrees from Fordham, Trinity College, St. John’s University, Colby College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Franklin and Marshall College, The College of St. Rose, Stonehill College, The College of Mount St. Vincent, Caldwell College and St. Bonaventure University, where he also serves on the Board of Trustees.

He has also served on the board at Fordham University and at the School For Strings in Manhattan.

Osgood and his wife Jean have five children. The National Fathers Day Committee named him Father of the Year in 1985.
