Columbus Day At Tower Grove Park

10/12/12-Dedicated members of the Italian-American Organization of St. Louis gathered once again at the base of the Christopher Columbus statue at Tower Grove park Friday morning. They like to observe the exact date that Columbus reportedly "discovered" America. It was not a place to bring up the PC-fueled campaign to rename the holiday "Explorers' Day" to shift focus off of Columbus, who some say was tainted by a legacy of slavery, imperialism, and the downfall of Native Americans. "I disagree totally with that bunch, that's nonsense," said Italian Club member Ed Berra. "Columbus did it, give him credit. Why change it now?". Bonus fun fact: The Tower Grove park statue is the only known depiction of Columbus wearing a beard because benefactor Henry Shaw said if he's paying for it, Columbus is going to have a beard.
