Like so many other things these days, the announcement came via Twitter -- the Cardinals let the world know that work on Ballpark Village had begun in earnest.

The tweet read "Structural steelwork has begun on Ballpark Village -- let the countdown to Opening Day 2014 begin!".

The $100 million first phase of Ballpark Village just north of Busch Stadium will include a restaurant, a rooftop seating deck for watching the game, and the first-ever Cardinals Hall of Fame. (KMOX Brett Blume) Ballpark Village Starting To...

Seats are covered in snow at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on December 29, 2012. Snow fell in the St. Louis area on December 28, 2012, with amounts from 1/2 inch in the downtown area to seven inches to the south and east. UPI/Bill Greenblatt
12/26/12-It took quite an effort to pull what appears to be a derelict vehicle from the Missouri River in north St. Louis County Wednesday. A diver from the St. Louis city fire department had to spend about 10 minutes submerged in the freezing water to attach a tow cable to the car, which was spotted earlier in the day. It was finally pulled to shore, the doors were opened, and...nothing inside but water and mud. Officials believe joyriders likely stole the car at some point and ditched it into the river at Sioux Passage park, adding that the stereo had been ripped from the dash of the older-model Chevrolet Malibu.
