Busch Stadium to Transform into Soccer Field
They're getting ready for this week's sold out international exhibition soccer match at Busch Stadium. The St. Louis Cardinals say the grounds crew is converting the baseball playing surface today into a soccer field. The process began after the Redbirds game ended Sunday. KMOX will broadcast the match between Manchester United and Chelsea Wednesday evening.
Head groundskeeper Bill Findley said the mound will have to be removed, as will a layer of all the dirt in the infield and around home plate. A plastic covering will be placed on the remaining dirt to protect it from moisture, before sod is laid on top. A company from Molina, Ill., will be helping the Cardinals' grounds crew team with the work.
Then after Thursday's game, the first soccer match at Busch Stadium, Findley estimated that it will take two-to-three days to return the field to normal conditions. Of course the rain is a factor in how long the crew has to get the work completed. (Photo via St. Louis Cardinals)
